Difference between electrical contractor and electrician

Some people tend to believe that electric contractors and electricians are one and the same thing.  They differ as electric contractors are companies that offer electrical services while electricians are the people appointed to carry out electrical services across the state. Installation, designing and maintenance of electrical system are the primary duties of the electricians.  Both electric contractors and electricians must have valid licenses to run their business.

Electrical contractors are divided into three broad categories.  The outside or line electrical contractors control the distributing line as well as high voltage transmission. They are responsible for carrying transmission and all the work needed to get electricity from the power plant into the substations and make it accessible to homes and other premises.

The inside contractors are responsible for providing and maintenance of electric systems for institutional, residential and commercial buildings.  Any work related to maintenance, installation or designing in such buildings is carried out by this group.  They are also responsible for installation of security and lighting system inside the boundary line to avoid violation of electrical code as stated by the law.

The integrated building system contractors handle installation of low voltage such as telecommunication. Electrical contractors hire experienced electricians to carry out electrical services. They also offer a three to five years training for those with no experience and later offer them jobs when they are qualified. Those who are not experienced are hired at an apprentice level by the electrical contractors and get to learn and promoted throughout the program.
